WHAT IS ACUPUNTURE?
Acupuncture is the essence of eastern medicine and has been long accepted as a gentle yet effective method to treat and prevent injuries and illnesses. All it takes is to insert ultrafine needles just under the skin’s surface at various points on the body to create micro stress where in by activating the body’s natural self-healing mechanism (similar to exercise which creates micro tears to the muscles forcing the body to heal the area to become stronger and more robust). Nowadays acupuncture is widely used as a complementary therapy to the pharmacological treatments in many countries. According to researches conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), acupuncture can help treat conditions such as pain and tension, osteoarthritis, MVA injuries, migraines and headaches, insomnia and many other disorders.
Acupuncture activates the nervous, immune, and endocrine systems, improves blood flow and restores circulation, and breaks up stagnant energy, so that the body can begin to heal and rebalance.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stagnant or blocked energy is the root of illness, pain, and disease. In a healthy, balanced individual, this energy (known as Qi) flows smoothly along pathways (known as meridians) that run throughout the body. It’s on these pathways that acupuncture points are located. There are hundreds of points on the body, each corresponding to a particular body system, organ, or anatomical area, which if blocked, prevent proper energy flow causing imbalance.
How it feels
You might be wondering how acupuncture feels, aren’t you? Well, everyone tends to panic when they hear the word needle, but the truth is the needles used are extremely thin and gentle to the skin. Most people report feeling a very small discomfort when the needle is inserted because it reaches a point that produces pressure or ache, but the discomfort fades quickly. In general, patients feel energized or relaxed both during the session and afterwards.
